DMI Conference: Re-Thinking the Future of Design Event Details

All Day
W San Francisco
181 3rd Street
San Francisco, CA 94103

Last year’s Re-Thinking … Design conference was a huge success for DMI and the Design community. Top thought leaders on Design Thinking generated deep, insightful conversations that moved the definition of the subject forward.

Due to the demand created by last year’s success, we are doing it again. Returning are our influential co-chairs to host the event, Roger Martin, author of the acclaimed new book, The Design of Business: Why Design Thinking is the Next Competitive Advantage, and Darrel Rhea, well-known author and design opinion leader.

DMI’s Design/Management Thinking conversational-format conference will move beyond philosophical arguments on Design Thinking: it will grapple with the real changes in the expectations that all types of organizations are beginning to have about Design’s potential level of contribution—and the implications for you as a professional.

D.Talks Case Study: method Event Details

12:00 PM
AIGA San Francisco
130 Sutter Street
Suite 600
San Francisco, CA 94104

To bridge the gap between business and design, AIGA San Francisco will present a lunch-time "D.Talks" seminar that will present a business case study on how Design is employed in a single company.

This year we feature method, the home care and personal care products brand. Join us in learning how method works to change "dirty business practices" by designing beautiful products that also happen to be nontoxic and environmentally friendly. We'll talk about metrics and insights that show the success of Design, and in a vernacular that business people will be more likely to understand.

Most companies treat product design like it "ain't no thang." At method, they believe product design is a thang. It's very much a thang. So when they were figuring out how to package our products, they enlisted world-renowned designer Joshua Handy to sculpt some of the finest pieces of recyclable plastic art this side of MoMA. Form, meet function. Function, form. You two play nice.

When registering, please choose from one of three lunch choices:
- Mesquite turkey with smoked bacon
- Chicken Athena
- Waldorf Vermont Cheddar (vegetarian)

Workshop: Social Impact Through Design Thinking Event Details

4:00 PM
Adobe San Francisco
601 Townsend Street
San Francisco, CA 94103

Design Thinking has been defined as a process for practical, creative resolution of problems or issues that looks for an improved future result. Unlike analytical thinking, design thinking is a creative process based around the “building up” of ideas.

AIGA SF, IDSA and IxDA invite you to learn how to utilize Design Thinking in your organization. This event is recommended for any socially responsible organizations, businesses, government agencies and designers of all disciplines to collaborate on implementing these powerful tools to better their communities. This workshop is made possible with the support of Adobe System's Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative.

Patrice Martin, Practice Lead and Systems Designer at IDEO, will introduce how IDEO is using Design Thinking for social innovation.

Then you will experience design thinking in a hands-on "Introduction to Design Thinking" workshop led by former Stanford d.school Fellow Corey Ford.

Patrice Martin is a Practice Lead at IDEO where she focuses on systems design to create meaningful human experiences. She works with clients to address large-scale social change through solutions spanning the private, public and social sector.

Bios:
Patrice's experience at IDEO has ranged from seeding innovation in clean water for the worldÕs poorest communities, envisioning new approaches to low-income housing, to rethinking blood donation in the US, where she currently leads the American Red Cross relationship. Patrice has led projects and project teams in healthcare, financial services, hospitality, workplace and education with clients including Nike Foundation, Mayo Clinic, Stanford University, and Marriott International. Patrice holds a BFA in industrial design from the University of Michigan and also regularly speaks at various conferences and forums.

Ticket includes admission to Design Week after-party at Autodesk to continue the discussion.
