Camelia Skikos is a conceptual womenswear brand based in San Francisco and launched in 2010. Developing her own label as a creative playground to explore new aesthetic boundaries, Camelia Skikos` design philosophy stems from a continuing fascination with the way garments can make an impact on our lives, based on the unconscious relations between the human being and the garments we wear. Designing everything at her San Francisco studio, Camelia Skikos` ideology stands for consciousness and humanity.
The Makers and Their Production Spaces
In an effort to maintain a small environmental footprint, a truly ethical process and a high quality product, every single garment is made using local resources of highly skilled people in the Bay Area, California. The product development and garment construction is done in collaboration with architect Corina Gheorghiu and the sewing is completed by subcontracting master couturier Thao Do.
The Making Process
Each garment is constructed, handcrafted and sewn in a unique way and the patterns are designed to minimize waste. When the garments include prints, they are hand-painted by Camelia Skikos.
The Production Model
With only one collection a year, Camelia Skikos` design and production process is based on the slow fashion model and is about creating garments that carry cultural and emotional connections, relevant to the places and people that made them. Everything is produced locally, in very small quantities and most pieces are one-of-a-kind and made to order.
Each collection is ethically produced using cruelty-free materials, non-toxic, and made of natural fabrics of 100% cotton or wool. With a focus on minimizing waste and reducing pollution, the last collection is almost entirely made of leftover fabrics from previous collections.
