Elliptic Designs specialize in steam-bending wood in extreme shapes (extreme bending). We make customized bent wood art, decor and lighting.
Materials & Ingredients
Sustainable woods, mainly softwoods. I use softwood most often because the carbon footprint is less than hardwood. Hardwood leaves 4x more of a carbon footprint than softwood. When I do use hardwood, I make an extra effort to get felled wood only, usually from the East Coast. They have more storms and blizzards that knock down trees.
LED efficient lighting. Low VOC finishes.
Packaging & Delivery
We use cardboard, newsprint paper, and paper tape for packing for USPS, FedEx, and UPS deliveries.
Quality & Value
The wooden steam-bent design object is meant to last through tightening the curves and knots when being made. Also, it goes through a 5 -7 step process before completion. Attention to detail is key to a timeless piece of customized functional art.
I tend to save and reuse as much as possible. Even the wood dust that doesn’t have impurities goes back into my gardens when possible. I give away the wood I cannot use and I collect other people’s scrap wood and try to implement them into my designs. Good thing, I have good relationships with my neighboring wood shops.
I to try consolidate my milling time to 1-2x a month. I have a great skylight in the studio so I generally don’t need to turn on the light. Also, there are a few LED lights I have replaced in the shop. I water my plants with the leftover steam water.
Goals & Aspirations
I put practices in place for myself because it feels right. I don’t see myself changing the process, and I don’t advertise my sustainability much either. I would like sustainable practices to be more common and affordable. There needs to be policies to support such practices. I’ll have my fingers crossed.
