Heliotrope San Francisco
Heliotrope San Francisco creates high-quality, all-natural skincare products – made in the Bay Area in small batches – using simple, organic ingredients. Founder Jonathan Plotzker-Kelly’s experience in product development and his work with small chemists throughout the Bay Area have brought natural, well-made, and fragrance-free skincare to the market.
We believe that people deserve to feel great in their skin. We offer natural, healing skin care for men and women without added fragrance, and consult with each client to create custom, individualized aromatherapy blends, using all-natural, undiluted essential oils. We enjoy sharing our enthusiasm about natural skin care and providing products that soothe, heal, moisturize and protect.
Materials and Ingredients
Heliotrope sources its raw materials – as much as we can – from certified producers and/or small farmers around the world. Due to the nature of some of our ingredients, they must be purchased at the source (and in many cases, there are no certifications available). All our essential oils are certified therapeutic grade (meaning they’re technically edible).
Packaging & Delivery
Our local deliveries are packed in recycled packaging and/or no packaging, if I pick up batches myself. Our outgoing orders are all in recycled cardboard packaging, and all our packing materials are recycled from inbound shipments (mostly Kraft paper or compostable “popcorn”).
When we see that an online customer is local, we try to swing by during our own commute, to save on shipping companies’ wasteful local deliveries. It’s just a small thing, but we think it’s nicer to do it that way.
Quality & Value
Our skincare & body care are made of the highest quality ingredients, and meant to be used in “small doses” – a little goes a long way, which eliminates excess product being wasted,
Heliotrope refills almost all bottles and jars at our two locations in San Francisco and Oakland. This eliminates packaging, and has a financial incentive for clients to bring back their empties. For regular customers, we offer bulk sizing so they can buy gallons or half-gallon jugs and do their own refills at home. It not only saves packaging, it often saves on shipping (both financial cost and carbon footprint), by reducing orders and/or store visits.
All our glass and plastic bottles and jars are recyclable; all our paper and cardboard is post-consumer and when we print our marketing materials, they’re on paper that would’ve otherwise been discarded, using soy-based inks.
Local Supply Chains
All of Heliotrope’s production is local – we work with chemists in Sonoma, Marin and Contra Costa Counties, and purchase all our cardboard from a San Leandro company, and do all our printing in San Francisco. We do all our bottling, labeling, packing, and shipping in our own facilities in San Francisco and Oakland.
The lights in our San Francisco store are on timers, and in our Oakland studio, all lights (in our studio and in the building we’re in) are motion-controlled, so they turn off themselves after a period of time.
Goals & Aspirations
We’d love to make all our plastic/glass packaging post-consumer recycled, but have not been able to do so as of yet. Where we can, we’ve used cardboard tubes for waxy products, and we’re seeking out corn-based plastic bottles – which are slowly entering the marketing place now.
Certifications & Memberships
Many of our ingredients are certified by their producers, but we are not certified on our own behalf – as of yet.
