SUMMARY:I Profess Traveling Poster Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco State University’s School of Design is hosting the traveling juried exhibit I Profess: The Graphic Design Manifesto https://www.audreygbennett.com/baohouse/i-profess . How do graphic designers visualize their teaching philosophies—their pedagogical beliefs that are in constant dialogue with other cultural\, philosophical\, and disciplinary values and practices?” Out of the submitted entries\, 23 responses were chosen to be included in the exhibit. This is an opportunity for design instructors in the Bay Area to see designed teaching philosophies by professors throughout the US. \nThe opening reception will be held on Thursday June 6th from noon until 2:00pm. \nThe exhibit will be open to the public from 12pm to 4pm the 3rd to the 7th.

SUMMARY:Design Challenge: AI character re-design
DESCRIPTION:What if the Terminator was a friendly brainstorming assistant rather than a cyborg of mass destruction? For decades\, AI characters have proliferated in film\, television\, literature\, and other forms of popular media. These AI characters are not always evil or malicious\, but their interactions with humans could often be improved. They could benefit from a re-design. \nTogether\, we will imagine and re-design ethical Generative AI experiences by exploring the interactions of the most notorious AI characters. Working in teams\, participants will transform less-than-pleasant interactions with AI movie characters into user-friendly experiences. Each team will not only re-design each character\, they will improve the overall interaction experience with that character. Each team will then present a prototype (visual\, interactive\, storyboard\, performance\, etc) to demonstrate their results. \nThe best character re-design\, wins! Join the IBM SF design community for an afternoon of innovation and friendly competition.

SUMMARY:Developing a network of shared interest in the future of San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Problem Library which is supporting a renaissance toward beauty\, goodness\, and truth in education\, art\, and cultural infrastructure. \nSince 2017\, the [working] program has been transforming vacant retail spaces in San Francisco and Oakland into sites of creative use: studios\, galleries\, and installations. By building relationships with property owners the program is able to provide artists with free space to imagine and create public facing activations. Through these relationships the program has helped actualize visions for the future of retail footprints. This approach comes from the programs belief that vacancy is an opportunity to critically rethink what public spaces do for people and work toward a San Francisco that is overflowing with energy and life. \nThe programs latest collaboration has given purpose to a vacant storefront turning it into an atelier and showroom for the sculptor Lynette Nicole Betancur. Over the past six months Lynette has reimagined the empty space into a platform for collaboration with other designers & artists\, a venue for the sale of her sculptures\, and a site of beauty for neighbors. Going forward\, [working] is continuing to learn and adapt how it can support educational and cultural goals\, and is seeking builders\, developers\, and planners looking to invest in large-scale\, thriving environments designed for people. \nWe invite you to join us at Lynette’s atelier for an open house and to learn more about the history of [working]\, the programs future ambitions\, and how you can help us work toward a positive and healthy future for San Francisco.

SUMMARY:2024 Makers Series | Fresh Brew: In Conversation with Mark Rogero
DESCRIPTION:The first of the 2024 Makers Series kicks off during San Francisco Design Week featuring Lise de Vito\, Owner\, Zack | de Vito Architecture + Construction in conversation with Mark Rogero\, Founder\, Concreteworks. The series is part of the Center for Architecture + Design’s “Fresh Brew” conversations and showcase makers whose work is directly or intersectionally related to architecture and the built environment. \nThe 2024 Makers Series continues the exploration into the essence of making within the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area. Join us as we look into the core of creativity\, with the aim to unravel the motivations that drive individuals to craft and innovate. We will explore the intricate interplay between inspiration\, innovation and creativity. We will address how technology seamlessly intertwines with creativity\, empowering makers with insights and capabilities to serve as a catalyst for their making. By shining a spotlight on this diverse range of makers\, we will unearth their stories and learn of the influences that help manifest their ideas: natural resources\, color\, experimental materials\, light\, San Francisco history\, architecture and urban planning. \nMark Rogero\, Founder\, Concreteworks. Mark founded Concreteworks in 1991 as a workshop in Emeryville crafting and fabricating commissioned pieces by hand. With a strong design sensibility\, adoption of advanced technologies\, a diverse and specialized team and dedication as a life-long student of concrete\, Concreteworks is well know for creating the seemingly impossible–and always beautiful. From products to furniture to collaborative architectural feats\, Mark Rogero’s exploration is on the cutting edge continuing to push concrete far beyond a strictly industrial material. \nMark Rogero’s drive for innovation\, craftmanship and sustainability continues decades later\, imaging that his company has just scratched the surface of this materials’ potential and limitations. \n(Moderator) Lise de Vito\, Owner\, Zack | de Vito Architecture + Construction. Lise has an established design career spanning over 25 years in the San Francisco Bay Area demonstrating innovation in varying project types\, primarily single-family as well as urban-infill\, multi-family residential design|build development projects. Lise de Vito’s creative drive is deeply influenced by a family legacy steeped in architecture\, industrial and graphic design and art. Lise de Vito’s role as the creator and moderator of the AIASF and the Center for Architecture + Design 2024 Makers Series is to facilitate conversations with makers and thinkers to broadcast their insights and inspirations of making and craft with the design and architecture community at large. \nFresh Brew is a series of conversations covering a variety of topics about all things architecture and design. SUMMARY:Hello\, Robot: Welcoming the Age of Human-Robot Interaction
DESCRIPTION:Card79 has been at the cutting edge of design and technology since our inception\, continually pushing the boundaries with emerging technologies like neurotechnology and robotics. This year\, we’re stepping away from our CAD tools and Post-it notes to invite you to a special evening focused on Human-Robot Interactions. \nWith the fields of AI and Hardware converging\, a technology inflection point is on the horizon. This historical moment holds the potential to enable robots to take on considerably more complex tasks—from caring for aging baby boomers to dramatically simplifying manufacturing processes. But how can we ensure this technical progress will actually address our complex human needs? \nJoin us as we open our studio for the first time to explore this emerging field of human-robot interactions. We’ll share our latest insights on the intersection of design and robotics and have invited some very special friends and collaborators to give speed presentations on these topics. \nOur guest speakers include: \n\nProf. Jussi Ängeslevä\, a partner at ART+COM and an independent designer who brings over 20 years of experience in UX and emerging technologies.\nGreg Katz\, an award-winning industrial designer with over 10 years working across design firms and in-house teams at Google X\, Everyday Robots\, and Amazon Lab126.\nAfshin Mehin\, who will share Card79’s work in developing robots for clients like Neuralink\, along with the team’s futuristic projects in speculative robotics.\n\nStay tuned for more speakers to be added — we have a lot in store for attendees! \nDoors open at 6:00 PM. Don’t miss this opportunity — secure your spot and RSVP now! \n
