Join us as we celebrate the final month of Mr. Roboto with a deep dive into the exhibition and drop-in activations inspired by the four types of art collaboratively created by San José State University (SJSU) students and the robotic arm – live in the gallery! \nSee the exhibition through curatorial eyes.  Guest curator Eleanor Pries facilitates a curator walk-through of Mr. Roboto from 1-2pm. Eleanor contextualizes the works on display and speaks to the creative practices of SJSU student cohorts\, all of whom found unique ways to work with the robot and integrate this human-machine collaboration into their projects. \nSwing by the museum between 12-4pm for Mr. Roboto-inspired activations. SUMMARY:Mahjong: The Intersections of Tradition\, Community\, and Craft
DESCRIPTION:EXiT at Catharine Clark Gallery\, FYRN\, and Sharon Zheng cordially invite you to an afternoon centered around learning mahjong\, a Chinese game played by four people. The event\, hosted by EXiT\, will take place in Catharine Clark Gallery’s main exhibition space during the run of In Real Life by Michael Hall and Salty Rainbow by Imin Yeh. \nImin Yeh is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in sculpture\, installation\, and participatory events. Her projects use print media both as a technical tool for realizing large-scale works and as a conceptual strategy for exploring free exchange and craft-based economies. Among Yeh’s diverse and ongoing projects\, this event will highlight her project Paper Mahjong\, of which kits can be purchased to build at home. This project encourages contemplation of the unseen labor behind cultural souvenirs\, while also delving into how games and craft nurture community\, collaboration\, and companionship. \nIn addition to Paper Mahjong\, mahjong game sets will be available for attendees to play. Local artist and creative Sharon Zheng will be present with her handmade How to Play Mahjong zines\, providing insights and instruction in playing the traditional game. In conversation with Salty Rainbow is In Real Life\, a show of trompe-l’œil artworks by Michael Hall that bridge painting\, sculpture\, and shelving. Both artists’ work engages with the domestic\, parenting\, and the ordinary details of family and community life through highly crafted artworks that draw upon historical artmaking techniques. Seating for game-play will be provided by FYRN\, renowned for its marriage of traditional woodworking techniques with modern manufacturing to produce elegant essential furniture pieces that advance the tradition of American furniture-making.

SUMMARY:The Future is Physital - Designs that Bridge the Physical and Digital World\, Enabled by XR\, AI and other Emerging Tech
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, designer and artist Xiaobi Iris Pan (https://irispan.net/) will share design trends made possible with the latest AI and XR technologies. Iris believes the future of design should poetically bridge the digital world with the physical\, to create a world where bits and atoms are interwoven\, where technology is used to connect rather than isolate\, inspire rather than distract\, nourish rather than exhaust people. \nThe lecture will feature 3 of Iris’ independent design works\, including\n1) Love Cassette\, the first-of-its-kind sound interactive installation that can turn one’s love message into a postcard on the spot\, to date\, Love Cassette has been visited by over 1 million participants around the world.\n2)Heat Chair\, an innovative computational design and fabrication system that can turn human ergonomics data into the robotic heating path\, to manufacture a chair that is completely responsive to human ergonomics.\n3) a series of XR interactive projects that break the boundary between the digital and physical world. \nThe audience will learn from the lecture: \n1) The future is physical. From an experience level\, Iris is advocating for hybrid and holistic experience design where the experience itself involves multiple senses and bridges the digital world with the physical.\n2) From a human level\, our products and experiences need to be personalizable\, anticipatory\, and adaptable to human needs and various human states. And luckily\, now these designs are made possible with advanced AI technology.\n3) From an environment and system level\, the future of design needs to be programmable. (Material\, Algorithm\, Fabrication. etc.) \nThese trends are also made possible because of the most recent advanced manufacturing techniques (e.g. nano-scale 3D printing\, bio-programmable material\, etc.)
