SUMMARY:ERICA TANOV: The Fine Art of Collaboration — The dynamics of successful creative partnerships
DESCRIPTION:Join clothing & lifestyle designer ERICA TANOV\, and her collaborators for a lively conversation and visual presentation\, moderated by acclaimed design writer DIANE DORRANS SAEKS. They will explore the art of creative collaboration for home design and fashion collections. In addition to Tanov\, panelists include three talented creative women: interior designer ELENA DENDIBERIA\, co-founder of Studio Ahead; textile artist AMY KEEFER\, the ‘Beyond Trend’ Coordinator and Textiles Studio Lead of Creative Growth  and artist EMILY PAYNE. \nERICA TANOV is a woman-owned company led by its namesake founder\, which recently celebrated 30 years in business. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area\, Erica Tanov is a designer of clothing and homeware collections.  Working with the finest luxurious fabrics and materials\, embracing meticulous construction and subtle detailing\, the designer is always drawn to a raw\, natural beauty. Erica Tanov collections are available at the designer’s Berkeley retail boutique\, and now also at her new Berkeley studio\, a carefully curated space\, which showcases the full breadth of her own designs\, including wallpaper\, architectural tiles\, furniture\, bedding\, and fabric collections\, as well as vintage ‘finds’ (furniture\, jewelry\, & accessories). Instagram: @ericatanov \nDIANE DORRANS SAEKS is the bestselling author of twenty-five design books\, including “Parisian By Design”\,  “Jean-Louis Denior Interiors”\,  and “Michael S. Smith: Elements of Style”. She was a founding editor of Metropolitan Home and Garden Design magazines. DORRANS SAEKS is interior design editor for PaperCity and an editor with C MAGAZINE. She has long-standing creative relationships with leading California and international designers. She has a large following on her Instagram: @dianedorranssaeks \nELENA DENDIBERIA is co-founder of interior design studio Studio Ahead where she leads creative work\, focusing on custom details. She is an internationally exhibited artist with a sensual approach to art and design. Elena brings together the tactile experience of her art practice with a design narrative that evolves through close collaboration with artists\, craftspeople\, and fabricators. Instagram: @studioahead \nTextile artist AMY KEEFER\, the ‘Beyond Trend’ Coordinator and Textiles Studio Lead of Creative Growth\, explores the intersection of art and apparel\, viewing clothing as an extension of oneself and a medium through which personal histories and allegiances are revealed. She holds an MFA from California College of the Arts. An advocate for wearable art in all forms\, Keefer joined Creative Growth\, a pioneering non-profit organization dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities\, in 2016. Since then\, Creative Growth’s annual runway show has expanded into a generative fashion department within the studio\, partnering with important artists\, brands and designers across the country. Founded in 1974 in Oakland\, California by Elias Katz and Florence Ludins-Katz\, the organization was established with a mission to utilize art as a primary means for individuals with disabilities to express themselves  within a safe and nurturing community and gain professional gallery exposure. Creative Growth operates as both studio and gallery that not only showcases the works of its 140+ artists but actively promotes their inclusion into major collections and institutions globally\, such as MoMA\, the Smithsonian and the recent historic acquisition by SFMoMA. Sales from the gallery directly fund artist support and studio operations\, helping to sustain and expand this vibrant creative community. @creativegrowth \nEMILY PAYNE grew up in Mill Valley\, Calif.\, and Amherst\, Mass. She received her B.A. from Oberlin College in Ohio and her M.F.A. in Printmaking and Book Arts from San Francisco State University in 1999. Her work can be seen at the Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley\, the SFMOMA Artist Gallery in San Francisco\, the Kala Art Institute and the Cecile Moochnek Gallery in Berkeley. SUMMARY:Climate Carrot or Sustainability Stick? SFSU Explores Strategies for Shifting to Sustainable Design Practices
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, San Francisco State University School of Design will launch the first materials library on the West Coast dedicated solely to sustainable materials: the SFSU Sustainable Materials Learning Library. SFSU Students and faculty in design have spent the last two years collecting physical material samples from groundbreaking sustainable materials innovators in countries as far flung as Australia\, New Zealand\, the Netherlands\, and Germany.  The sustainable materials in the library now include “leathers” made from cactus\, kombucha\, mushrooms\, and pythons\, concrete from hemp\, band-aids from bamboo\, and even sustainable bio-glitter! \nIn this conversation\, SFSU Professor Fernando Carvalho and students Cole Galvin and Maria Nguyen discuss persuasive design strategies for creators\, product designers\, and architects—like developing products from biomaterials or offering a resource such as the SFSU Materials Learning Library\, as well as a current effort underway to compel education on sustainable building materials for all new building construction in collaboration with the University of California\, San Francisco and the City of San Francisco. In this conversation we will discuss strategies of both persuasion and regulation in hopes of compelling the creative community to make the critical shift to more sustainable design products and practices. \n  \nNOTE: This event requires climbing 2 flights of stairs to attend. There is no elevator or lift available. \n———————————————— \n“Climate Carrot or Sustainability Stick? SFSU Explores Strategies for Shifting to Sustainable Design Practices”\n \nSan Francisco State University School of Design \nProfessor Fernando Carvalho \nMaria Nguyen [SFSU Student]\nCole Galvin [SFSU Student]\nhttps://www.sfsusustainablematerials.org/

SUMMARY:Let’s Make Book Reports! A Zine-Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Christie George’s book report The Emergency Was Curiosity\, we’re going to make our own. Bring a beloved book or find inspiration in one of the books in the Four One Nine Library. It doesn’t have to be your favorite book\, just a book you’d like to remember. \nWe all have things that we’re paying attention to\, that we’d like to remember and that we’d like to share with others. A book report is a way to focus your attention on what you most loved about a book and how you felt when you read it. We’ll talk about book reports as a way to practice paying deep attention and learn how to make a simple zine from a single sheet of paper! \nChristie will be joined by designer Julie Tinker from Hope Lab who collaborated with her to make a DIY book report station at the enchanting Clio’s Bookstore in Oakland. \nWhat to bring: Bring a book you’d like to remember. We’ll provide the rest of the materials. \nNOTE: This event requires climbing 2 flights of stairs to attend. There is no elevator or lift available. \n

SUMMARY:Begin with the end
DESCRIPTION:PROWL is an industrial design and research studio creating new solutions for people and the planet by employing materials\, processes\, and technology more responsibly. Our approach to regenerative design is holistic\, derived from a system-wide perspective that uncovers new solutions through knowledge-sharing across industries and distinct expertise. Instead of asking how we can do “less bad\,” we ask how we can do “the most good”. To that end\, we begin with the end –– to fully understand what the next life of each product\, material\, or space we design could become. Because we expect an afterlife that gives equal weight to design and its regeneration. \nIn this conversation\, we will talk through our methodologies\, some common hurdles that exist that get in the way of building responsible products\, and how we approach pushing past them. \nLauryn Menard + Baillie\, Co-Founders \n  \nEvent hosted by DesignBayArea

SUMMARY:Analog Intelligence with Everett Katigbak / Anthropic
DESCRIPTION:Everett will explore the need for human craft and creativity in the age of AI. While artificial intelligence has made exponential strides\, the talk will discuss how the best AI future should augment and amplify human skills\, not replace them. As more AI companies emerge\, designing for AI brands doesn’t mean everything must be AI-generated\, but rather\, the design process can be more collaborative and efficient with clients\, teammates\, and AI assistants. \nEverett is the Creative Director at Anthropic\, and was previously the Executive Producer at Stripe where he helped build their publishing arm\, Stripe Press. He’s also a co-founder if the Analog Research Laboratory\, a print studio that integrated analog techniques into Facebook’s brand and company culture. \n\nThis event is hosted by DesignBayArea.

SUMMARY:Attending to Intuition
DESCRIPTION:An interactive workshop helping creatives hear\, recognize\, strengthen and pay attention to their intuition with Four One Nine founder and creative consultant and coach\, Sonya Yu. \nOur inner voices are constantly begging for our attention. In the face of strong (and not always accurate) emotions like fear\, anxiety\, excitement\, and even joy\, how do we notice and recognize our intuitive voice\, allowing it to guide us to authentic\, aligned decision-making? \nIn this hour-long workshop\, Sonya will help participants articulate these inner voices and feelings\, work through real-life situations they’re encountering\, and ultimately answer the questions: What does authentic intuition sound like and how do I learn to trust it? \n\nNOTE: This event requires climbing 2 flights of stairs to attend. There is no elevator or lift available. \n  \nABOUT SONYA:\n \nSonya Yu is the founder and visionary behind Four One Nine\, a thriving creative ecosystem that is dedicated to fostering culture and supporting artists. As a creative coach and consultant\, she frequently speaks at arts and educational institutions on protecting and expressing one’s ingenuity. \n  \nNamed one of ArtNews’ Top 200 Collectors of 2023 and one of Cultured Magazine’s 2023 Young Collectors\, Sonya currently serves on the nonprofit boards of SFMOMA\, The Hammer Museum and is an active member of the Dia Leadership Committee.

SUMMARY:The Emergency Was Curiosity: In Defense of Useless Projects
DESCRIPTION:A talk and Q&A with investor and producer Christie George about The Emergency Was Curiosity\, an illustrated book report inspired by Jenny Odell’s How to Do Nothing. Christie’s project could be categorized as useless – there was no client\, no publisher\, no commissioning editor; she did this project for no other reason than that she wanted to. \nDuring the summer of 2020\, inspired by ideas about attention in Jenny’s book\, Christie began making hand-drawn illustrations\, watercolors\, and collages as a creative response and a means to develop her own practice of attention. What began for her as a “book report” turned into a body of artwork\, an exhibition\, an event series and\, more recently\, a group project. \nThis talk will ask each of us: what is worth paying attention to? Christie will mount a defense of your most useless projects – the work that is hard to categorize\, commodify\, or sell – and challenge you to honor and follow your own creative attention. \nSpeakers: \nChristie George\,  Investor/Producer \n  \n

SUMMARY:Biofabrication Workshop: Grow a Mycelium Object with 10th Floor Studio
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve been curious about biofabrication or biomaterials\, this workshop is for you. \nGrow fungi into an object for your home. Here at 10th Floor Studio\, we firmly believe that fungi can help us transition away from synthetic petroleum products and towards futures where humans coexist as a part of the natural world. We’ve been working with fungi for the last 5 years and are excited to offer a workshop to introduce you to these incredible organisms! Fungi exist in many forms\, in this session we’ll be using the oft-unseen underground body of the fungi\, called mycelium\, to grow a bud vase for your home. This 2.5-hour workshop will begin with a brief intro to growing objects out of fungi and our work at 10th Floor Studio. You’ll learn the basics about choosing a suitable species of fungi\, how to avoid contamination\, and how to create an object using a mold form. We’ll walk you through designing and assembling your customized bud vase mold. Then it’s time to break up the mycelium\, pack it in the mold\, and let it grow! \nNote: You’ll take home your bud vase still in the mold. It will need 2 weeks for the mycelium to grow out and firm up. It will not need any attention while it grows. After 2 weeks you’ll dry it out and halt any further growth. Don’t worry\, we’ll give you instructions on what to do once you leave the workshop 🙂 \n**DETAILS:** \n– Try biofabrication yourself and take home your mycelium bud vase\n– Cost: $120\n– Limited to 20 people

SUMMARY:Dynamic Minds\, Brilliant Creativity: AIDLIN DARLING AND BAMO
DESCRIPTION:“Dynamic Minds\, Brilliant Creativity” Led by Best-selling author of 25 books on design and architecture\, Instagram influencer\, design lecturer and instructor\, and founder of THE STYLE SALONISTE blog\, Diane Dorrans Saek\, this year’s expanded interior designer program follows on the great success of last year’s program. The program offers a rare opportunity to tour top architecture and interior design studios\, meet with designers and architects one-on-one\, as well as attend talks and seminars led by Dorrans Saeks\nAttendees are invited to a private reception at end of day\, 5pm. At this convivial time\, we recap the day\, meet the designers and architects\, and discuss design\, internships\, career inspirations and architecture.\n*Meeting place address will be given on completion of ticket booking.\n*No refunds available \nAIDLIN DARLING DESIGN \nJoshua Aidlin and David Darling began their partnership crafting furniture together in a San Francisco wood shop in 1998. Today\, this history of craft and passion for shared making anchors its collaborative process. The firm’s approach to each project is client and site specific\, and includes open communication among clients\, consultants\, fabricators\, and builders. \nAt Aidlin Darling Design\, the firm thinks of design as a sensory art\, one where the way a space feels is as important as how it looks. As a multidisciplinary firm\, this ethos is its guiding principle across projects of any scale\, use\, or purpose. \nThe firm recently collaborated with director Braden King on a film that explores how its studio’s work moves beyond just the visual to engage all of the senses. The result\, Aidlin Darling Design: Architecture for the Senses\, captures the firm’s ethos and commitment to creating soulful environments. \nBAMO \nFor thirty years\, BAMO has created captivating environments that flow\, function\, and make people feel welcome\, at ease\, and inspired to live — and to dream — more fully. A collective of designers\, the firm brings to each project a richness of experience and perspective\, along with an impassioned view of life and our work. \nThe firm engages clients graciously\, listening for the unspoken needs beneath their stated desires. Speaking to the psyche through the senses\, and building in layers of meaning\, the firm creates true havens: places apart from the everyday. Its interpretive skill is matched by the rigor\, expertise\, and ingenuity the firm brings to seeing projects through to completion. This is why hospitality\, residential\, and corporate clients around the world trust BAMO to bring their visions to life.

SUMMARY:Steep Urbanists Tour directed by Lina Bondarenko
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a participatory movement experience in architecture and perspective over Telegraph Hill.\nThis tour positions urban design as a collaboration with the earth’s geography. \nThe plan of San Francisco drapes a city grid over 48 hills. Streets undulate like rollercoasters\, snaking around the land’s contours\, rupturing to reveal concrete walls bisected by vegetated staircases. Architects design horizontal planes to contort and step into vertical terrain. Steep slopes swap roles between the theater’s rake and the elevated stage. The observer is always observed. Distorted perspectives amplify the performance of everyday life through distance. \nSteep Urbanists are invited to dance through the spatial volumes of San Francisco’s sloped streets\, tuned to corresponding musical volumes that trace the synchronicity between a sound wave and an architectural section. \nSteep Urbanist is a project investigating how human infrastructure responds to the logic of the land directed by Lina Bondarenko– an architect\, dancer\, educator\, and student.

Richard is an SEGD fellow and award-winning designer\, educator\, author\, and artist. His career spans forty years in graphic\, environmental\, interior\, and exhibition design where he divides his time between professional practice and academia. In his new book\, Richard celebrates his mentor and unsung hero of mid-century modern design through featuring images of his work along with rarely shared collages\, paintings\, and remembrances from friends\, family\, students\, and colleagues.\nInspired by modernism\, Rudolph de Harak was one of the most influential American graphic design pioneers. His design work included everything from album covers\, book jackets\, and branding to furniture\, exhibitions\, and museums\, often incorporating innovative and experimental photographic techniques and exploring abstraction\, geometry\, and color. With an early career beginning in Los Angeles to working as a design consultant and educator in New York City\, de Harak’s clients include The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Columbia Records\, Esquire magazine\, McGraw-Hill Publishing\, and the Cummins Engine Company\, among many others. Rational Simplicity: Rudolph de Harak\, Graphic Designer is the first publication to document de Harak’s career. \nThe event will take place at the Haworth Showroom in The Mills Building located at 220 Bush Street\, Suite 975\, approximately 2 blocks from Montgomery BART Station. \nPlease use the entrance at 220 Bush Street to access the building. All other entrances will be locked at the time of the event. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. \nSF Design Week attendees will be entered into door prize raffles for a copy of the book! \nWe would like to thank the Haworth San Francisco Showroom for generously hosting us for this event! \nAbout Richard Poulin \nRichard Poulin is a designer\, educator\, author\, and artist. Throughout his career he has focused on a generalist approach to all aspects of design\, including graphic\, environmental\, interior\, and exhibition design\, dividing his time between professional practice and academia. He was Design Director and Managing Partner of Poulin + Morris Inc.\, a New York City-based multidisciplinary design consultancy he co-founded in 1989 with Douglas Morris. As a highly-respected educator\, he was an adjunct professor at Cooper Union and the School of Visual Arts for over two decades and a recipient of a research grant in design history from the Graham Foundation for the Advanced Studies in Fine Art. Richard is also a recipient of a Fellow from the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD)\, the profession’s highest honor; and his work is in the permanent design collections of the Denver Museum of Art\, Letterform Archive\, Library of Congress\, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). He is the author of several books on graphic design\, typography\, and design history which have been translated into eight languages and used by students and practitioners worldwide. Richard’s new book\, a monograph on the life and work of Rudolph de Harak—Rational Simplicity: Rudolph de Harak\, Graphic Designer—traces the rich and varied career of one of the masters of American mid-century modernist graphic design and was released in the Fall of 2022 by Thames & Hudson (London). As an artist\, his most recent solo exhibition\, entitled “Visual Essays: Elemental Singularities” was at the Brian Marki Fine Art Gallery in Palm Springs\, California. His fine art has also been exhibited throughout the United States and is in the collections of several private collectors. \nRichard lives in Palm Springs\, California. SUMMARY:Changemakers\, with Maria Giudice
DESCRIPTION:CCA’s Design Division presents a talk & book signing by Maria Giudice\nBecoming a Changemaker by Leading with Design \nDesign leaders have evolved from being responsible for executing design concepts to having a crucial role in driving change across organizations. This is welcome progress\, but with greater responsibility comes new challenges\, especially when it comes to championing change in organizations likely to resist it. \nAs design-driven changemakers have risen in the ranks of business\, they’ve “learned on the job\,” experiencing both setbacks and victories. We captured many of these learnings by interviewing over 40 design leaders and incorporating their shared wisdom in our book\, Changemakers: How Leaders Can Design Change in an Insanely Complex World. Whether these leaders worked at IBM and Google\, a US government agency\, or a small consulting firm\, their insights and observations are applicable to all and well-worth considering. \nThis presentation will offer an overview of what we learned. It will cover Top 5 mistakes changemakers make as they navigate the messy processes and people issues involved in driving any type of change. You’ll learn how to determine the ground conditions needed for success\, how to find and align supporters\, how to minimize detractors\, and how to repurpose design tools\, frameworks\, and techniques to your advantage. \nBio:\nFor three decades\, creative teams and business leaders have sought the provocative vision and mentorship of Maria Giudice. After founding the pioneering experience design firm Hot Studio and leading global teams at Facebook and Autodesk\, Maria’s mission today is to build the next generation of creative leaders. Through one-on-one coaching\, group coaching\, and team-building workshops\, Maria unlocks the potential hidden in executives and the people they lead. A popular speaker at design and business conferences\, Maria is also the author of four design books\, including Rise of the DEO: Leadership by Design\, and most recently Changemakers: How Leaders Can Design Change in an Insanely Complex World.

SUMMARY:Risky Business: Climate Change\, Design\, and Avoiding Unforeseen Consequences
DESCRIPTION:Risky Business: Climate Change\, Design\, and Avoiding Unforeseen Consequences \nThroughout human history\, new tools and technologies have simultaneously moved us forward as a society and set us back with unforeseen consequences. Here in the Bay Area\, there is a common desire to disrupt\, move fast\, and break things\, but that approach is not valid for the climate crisis. \nWe as designers must learn to recognize the possible unintended consequences of our work. Join us as we consider the near-term and long-term effects of our work as designers\, innovators\, and problem solvers at our next Climate Designers Bay Area event — Risky Business: Climate Change\, Design\, and Avoiding Unforeseen Consequences. \nThe evening’s conversations will highlight helpful perspectives and practices for considering the potential impact of the work we do as designers as we collectively address the climate emergency. \nAfter the speakers\, attendees are invited to participate in a mock “premotem” exercise where they will learn techniques for assessing project risk. This activity is optional\, and we’ll also have an opportunity for socialization. \nSpeakers: \nMike Monteiro \nMike is cofounder and design director of Mule Design\, an interactive design studio whose work has been called “delightfully hostile” by The New Yorker. He’s written four books: Design Is a Job\, You’re My Favorite Client\, Ruined by Design\, and The Collected Angers. He’s not as smart as his wife\, or as charming as his dog. He’s pretty much given up on tech and is considering a future as a lighthouse keeper or record store owner\, or maybe opening a record store in a lighthouse. \nKelly Neuner\nKelly (they/them) is a transdisciplinary designer who is passionate about exploring the intersections of people\, systems\, and technology. Their background includes work with companies ranging from nonprofits and startups to Fortune 500 companies in healthcare\, technology\, education\, fintech\, and retail\, both in consulting and in-house at Fast Company. They center their design and futures practice around responsible design and participatory practices. They have completed dedicated training in equity-centered design and research and responsible tech development with organizations including Creative Reaction Lab\, HmntyCntrd\, and Gray Area. Kelly is currently the Global Chapter & Community Lead for the Design Futures Initiative and is a City Lead for SheFi. Kelly graduated from The New School & Parsons with a focus in Design Management\, which combined design\, business\, marketing\, and psychology. \nJulia Solano \nJulia is a designer\, artist\, and bamboo architect. She’s Community Architect for The Tech We Want\, an initiative focused on supporting a new wave of leaders\, companies\, and technologies built on inclusivity\, mutualism\, sustainability\, and responsible innovation. She’s spent much of the past decade co-founding and designing in AI companies\, building bamboo and earth structures for communing\, and exploring the complexity of community by living in experimental cities\, artist cooperatives\, and cults in efforts to better understand and build social\, digital\, and physical infrastructure to bridge to more hopeful futures. \nAgenda: \n6:00: Doors Open & Networking \n6:15: Speakers & Q&A \n7:30: Social Time & Pre-mortem Exercise \n8:00: Event Ends

SUMMARY:Jam Session by frog Design: Co-Creating a Code of Ethics in AI & Other Rising Technologies
DESCRIPTION:During this 90-minute session\, we want to bring creatives\, technologists and forward-thinkers together to co-create a code of ethics around the increasingly ubiquitous\, and intelligent technologies that are making their way into our day to day worlds. \nAt this pivotal moment\, the rise of ChatGPT and other AI-powered products and services have illuminated countless questions about how\, when\, and why we should use these rising technologies. We are at a critical inflection point in design and technology—What are the ethical codes that will foster our relationship with AI technology? Who gets to write them? What’s at stake here in this plot twist with humans and technology? \nAs designers and creatives\, we are increasingly at the forefront of making decisions about technology use in the products and services that we help create. For this event\, we will identify tactical actions that we can take and craft principles that can help us establish a north star for designing with rising tech. \nThis event is brought to you by frog’s Service Design team\, and will take a service-centered approach to this co-creation session. We are excited to share more about our team\, methodologies as we co-create with all of you.

SUMMARY:Designing for Climate
DESCRIPTION:Know what would be the ultimate plot twist? If enterprises across the globe went from key contributors to climate change\, to critical drivers in halting the climate crisis. That’s our goal at Watershed – to create software that empowers companies to cut their carbon emissions. \nThe Watershed design team is thrilled to host a discussion on what it’s like designing for climate – how to go deep on a complex domain\, how to design for a space without much prior art\, and what it’s like balancing immediate customer needs alongside an urgent global mission. \nWe certainly don’t have the answers – in this session\, you can expect a brief intro and case study from our team (and/or other experts in the field!)\, but then we’ll invite you to share your perspective…whether you’re deep in climate tech too\, or from an analogously complex space.

SUMMARY:Designing through a Merger or Acquisition
DESCRIPTION:As a product ecosystem expands from its first product offering to a suite of interconnected products\, the design team often scales and forms subteams within the larger design organization. With this additional organizational and product complexity\, it becomes increasingly difficult for designers to stay aligned on design best practices as well as interaction and visual design details. When design organizations reach this tipping point\, if they haven’t done so already\, they will begin to invest in a centralized design system. All good then\, right? Yes\, but\, now imagine that the already complex product suite doubles\, triples\, or even quadruples in size due to a sudden merger or acquisition. Moreover\, the acquired company brings its own perspective on design best practices and potentially their own design system. Through our panel discussion\, we’ll discuss key user experience methodologies that can help design teams who find themselves in similar situations and are unsure where to start. Panelists will cover topics such as how to align on end-to-end design processes\, how to utilize user research to establish shared baselines\, how to converge disparate design systems\, and more. By the end of this discussion\, attendees should walk away with a design-focused playbook to help them proactively deliver on the original promise of their organization’s merger or acquisition. (Note: for the first 30 minutes or so we’ll have light snacks and beverages so come on time if you’d like to mingle with the other attendees!) \n*Registration for this event will close on June 4th 2:00 pm PDT due to building security logistics.

SUMMARY:IBM Design presents… SF’s Best “Worst Design” Challenge
DESCRIPTION:As designers\, we strive to create products\, experiences\, visual\, and other solutions that are useful\, usable\, and desirable for the intended audiences. This requires a deep knowledge of user pain points\, needs\, and desires…but what would happen if we use that knowledge to deliver users to their destination in the most frustrating way possible? \nIn this fun\, light-hearted design jam\, participants will compete to design uniquely un-user-friendly solutions for a given prompt. While it may sound simple\, designing the these terrible processes could be deceptively difficult. Participants will follow the classic design process\, but look instead for “holes of opportunity” to create\, exacerbate\, and twist problems instead of solutions. \nThis design jam is “the mental equivalent of standing on your head”—it allows us as designers to take what we do for our day job and see design from a fun\, new perspective. Let’s have fun\, thinking creatively\, and change the way the story unfolds by viewing the design process in a new way. \nWhat’s in it for participants? \nOther than an opportunity to take part in a fun design jam\, there will be food\, swag giveaways\, and networking opportunities. \nEvent schedule \nFirst 20 min – arrival\, meet & greet\, networking\n20 min – brief presentation\, explanation of challenge goals\, instructions\, and expectations; design challenge prompt announced\n60 min – participants work on challenge within their teams\n20 min – share and tell: teams present their designs\n30 min – winners announced\, closing statements\, and enjoy refreshments

SUMMARY:Wiki Art Jam
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to be “The Last Best Place on the Internet”? While billions of people read Wikipedia every day\, most are unaware of or do not understand the massive collaboration happening behind the scenes\, involving people and machines. This collaboration is what allows Wikipedia to remain free and open source. Our vision is to host a participatory art installation in the streets of San Francisco\, where a large canvas will be set up for participants to collaboratively create an art piece. Participants will be allowed to choose roles that mimic volunteer roles on Wikipedia\, and will be given constraints based on their role. The piece’s creative direction will be guided by a local San Francisco artist. We will livestream the art-making process and add a digital layer to the recording that comments on the state of privacy on Wikipedia.

SUMMARY:Onur Yüce Gun: The In-Between is the Best Place to be at (AI\, Computational Design\, Digital Manufacturing)
DESCRIPTION:The In-Between is the Best Place to be at\nOnur Yuce Gun\, Ph.D. \nThe forthcoming lecture at San Francisco Design Week 2023\, titled “The in-between is the best place to be at\,” promises to offer an insightful exploration of the future of design from a human-centered digital computation perspective. This event is sponsored by New Balance. \nAligned with the event’s theme\, ‘Plot Twist\,’ this lecture will emphasize the importance of embracing change and the unexpected\, rather than clinging to stability and trends\, as a fundamental aspect of design thinking and existence. \nJust as the city of San Francisco thrives on the twists and turns that drive innovation and progress\, so too does computational design. Similarly\, “plot twists” that have disrupted industries and economies will be explored as crucial moments that have enriched Onur’s unique design career trajectory. Whether planned or unplanned\, these changes will be presented as opportunities to spark creativity and shape the future. \nThis lecture will uniquely portray Computational Design by drawing on experiences and accomplished projects\, ranging from half-a-mile tall skyscrapers to limited production 3D-printed shoes. It will weave a narrative of how these elements intertwine with the human experience and the concept of getting lost. \nThe discussion will span a variety of topics\, including complete value chains\, human-centered innovative thinking\, hobbyist teaching\, servant leadership\, ontology\, and references to Dante’s Divine Comedy. The lecture aims to provide a fresh perspective on navigating the “plot twists” of our rapidly evolving world\, by being persistent on residing in the in-between\, and stimulate engaging conversations on this captivating topic. \n  \nBIO \nOnur Yüce Gün is a seasoned computational design leader\, researcher\, and instructor. SUMMARY:De.Coded. Creating a Human Atlas of Silicon Valley with Studio Sutherl&
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by Jim Sutherland of Studio Sutherl& in the UK. \nHuman Atlas is a social-impact art platform founded by artist Marcus Lyon. Mapping community through oral history\, portraits and ancestral DNA. Inspiring the next generation of change. \nHuman Atlas projects are research-based\, interdisciplinary explorations of the people of a specified geography. They are built on extensive nomination processes. A carefully curated group nominates individuals who are championing and driving social impact in all its forms: from public servants to entrepreneurs\, from non-profit leaders and activists to artists and scientists. The projects then map these remarkable humans through photographic portraits\, app-based oral histories\, info-graphic mapping and ancestral DNA. Human Atlas projects take on many digital forms but always begin as a published limited edition book and an interactive exhibition. \nStudio Sutherl& has designed a Human Atlas of Brazil\, Germany\, Detroit and now Silicon Valley and are currently working in Los Angeles. \nABOUT Studio Sutherl& and Jim Sutherland: \nStudio Sutherl& was set in London up by Jim Sutherland in 2014 to be agile and playful – building teams from the best artists\, architects\, photographers\, writers and strategists to suit each project. There is immense creative potential in collaboration. And great joy. \nHe has rebranded the Natural History Museum\, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis\, The Arts Society\, Williams F1\, Prostate Cancer UK\, National Museums Scotland\, Welsh National Opera\, and Start-rite shoes. He has designed over 50 stamps to date for Royal Mail including the Agatha Christie set in 2016. Awards include 96 pencils at D&AD. He has judged D&AD nine times (including Foreman of the Branding Jury in 2023). \nStudio Sutherl& was the most awarded design studio at D&AD in 2017\, and came number one in the Computer Arts UK studio rankings in 2017 and 2018.

SUMMARY:HCI: Human Connection Interaction
DESCRIPTION:Leave your titles at the door\, and arrive with curiosity in your heart. This gathering is a chance to get to know each other for who you really are without your job title\, achievements\, accomplishments\, or other markers of status and success. First names only. No job titles or company names. For one hour\, you’ll step into an altered reality where you’ll learn about others and allow yourself to be known not for “what you do” but for who you are — as humans who have triumphed over the twists and turns of your life. You will be immersed in others’ stories\, and you’ll bless them by sharing your own. This guided conversation is an experience of uncommon authenticity and you might discover that this co-created experiment is your favorite interaction of the week. If you crave openness\, intimacy\, kindness\, and you have a willingness to try new things\, then this is absolutely for you.
