SUMMARY:Dynamic Minds: Creative Brilliance Seminar Series | Studio visits to Aidlin Darling Design\, ODADA and  Bohlin Cywinski Jackson [BCJ]
DESCRIPTION:This tour includes studio visits to Aidlin Darling Design\, ODADA and  BCJ. 5pm Reception. Participation will converse\, meet\, discuss idea\, and meet the designers and architects. \nAbout the Studios\nAIDLIN DARLING DESIGN:   \nIn 1998\, co-founders Joshua Aidlin and David Darling began the studio crafting furniture together in a San Francisco woodshop. Today\, this passion for shared making anchors the studio’s collaborative process. The approach to each project is client and site specific\, and includes open communication among clients\, consultants\, fabricators\, and builders to achieve innovative\, unexpected results. \nADD pursues an architecture of restraint that engages the senses\, connecting us to place and to ourselves. In a world that is increasingly dominated by the visual and virtual\, the firm sees design as a multisensory experience\, one in which the way something feels\, smells and sounds is as important as how it looks.  \nExploring how the studio’s work moves beyond the visual\, Braden King’s film Aidlin Darling Design: Architecture for the Senses\, captures the firm’s ethos and commitment to creating soulful environments. \nODADA design studio: \nFounded in 1987 by Orlando Diaz-Azcuy\, ODADA is an internationally recognized commercial and residential interior design firm. In 1990\, David Todd Oldroyd and Greg Stewart became principals\, with recent additions to the leadership team. Together they extend the firm’s strong architectural and design foundation\, bringing a clean\, focused approach to contemporary and traditional projects.  The firm has a staff of 20 architects and designers to assure highly personalized attention to each client. The company currently works on projects around the world\, including decades-long clients in London\, San Francisco and Honolulu. \nBCJ architects\, ending with a reception. \nBOHLIN CYWINSKI JACKSON: Founded in 1965\, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson is an architecture practice with studios in Wilkes-Barre\, Pittsburgh\, Philadelphia\, Seattle\, San Francisco\, and New York. We work with our clients to understand the nature of their unique circumstance—the people\, place\, and materials that inform each design—to help translate collective aspirations into built environments that are greater than the sum of their parts. The resulting architecture feels simultaneously grounded and transcendent\, carefully crafted to embody resiliency\, and adapt to an ever-changing world. Our work has received more than 800 regional\, national\, and international awards for design\, including four American Institute of Architects (AIA) COTE Top Ten Awards \n  \nAbout Diane Dorrans Saeks:\nLearn more about Diane Dorrans Saeks on Instagram @dianedorranssaeks \nDiane is the best-selling author of 25 design books\, including ‘Michael S\, Smith Elements of Style’ (Rizzoli) and her two most recent\, “Jean-Louis Deniot Interiors’ (Rizzoli) and ‘Parisian by Design (Rizzoli). SUMMARY:The Emergency Was Curiosity: In Defense of Useless Projects
DESCRIPTION:A talk and Q&A with investor and producer Christie George about The Emergency Was Curiosity\, an illustrated book report inspired by Jenny Odell’s How to Do Nothing. Christie’s project could be categorized as useless – there was no client\, no publisher\, no commissioning editor; she did this project for no other reason than that she wanted to. \nDuring the summer of 2020\, inspired by ideas about attention in Jenny’s book\, Christie began making hand-drawn illustrations\, watercolors\, and collages as a creative response and a means to develop her own practice of attention. What began for her as a “book report” turned into a body of artwork\, an exhibition\, an event series and\, more recently\, a group project. \nThis talk will ask each of us: what is worth paying attention to? Christie will mount a defense of your most useless projects – the work that is hard to categorize\, commodify\, or sell – and challenge you to honor and follow your own creative attention. \nSpeakers: \nChristie George\,  Investor/Producer \n  \n

SUMMARY:Begin with the end
DESCRIPTION:PROWL is an industrial design and research studio creating new solutions for people and the planet by employing materials\, processes\, and technology more responsibly. Our approach to regenerative design is holistic\, derived from a system-wide perspective that uncovers new solutions through knowledge-sharing across industries and distinct expertise. Instead of asking how we can do “less bad\,” we ask how we can do “the most good”. To that end\, we begin with the end –– to fully understand what the next life of each product\, material\, or space we design could become. Because we expect an afterlife that gives equal weight to design and its regeneration. \nIn this conversation\, we will talk through our methodologies\, some common hurdles that exist that get in the way of building responsible products\, and how we approach pushing past them. \nLauryn Menard + Baillie\, Co-Founders \n  \nEvent hosted by DesignBayArea

SUMMARY:Let’s Make Book Reports! A Zine-Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Christie George’s book report The Emergency Was Curiosity\, we’re going to make our own. Bring a beloved book or find inspiration in one of the books in the Four One Nine Library. It doesn’t have to be your favorite book\, just a book you’d like to remember. \nWe all have things that we’re paying attention to\, that we’d like to remember and that we’d like to share with others. A book report is a way to focus your attention on what you most loved about a book and how you felt when you read it. We’ll talk about book reports as a way to practice paying deep attention and learn how to make a simple zine from a single sheet of paper! \nChristie will be joined by designer Julie Tinker from Hope Lab who collaborated with her to make a DIY book report station at the enchanting Clio’s Bookstore in Oakland. \nWhat to bring: Bring a book you’d like to remember. We’ll provide the rest of the materials. \nNOTE: This event requires climbing 2 flights of stairs to attend. There is no elevator or lift available. \n

SUMMARY:Climate Carrot or Sustainability Stick? SFSU Explores Strategies for Shifting to Sustainable Design Practices
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, San Francisco State University School of Design will launch the first materials library on the West Coast dedicated solely to sustainable materials: the SFSU Sustainable Materials Learning Library. SFSU Students and faculty in design have spent the last two years collecting physical material samples from groundbreaking sustainable materials innovators in countries as far flung as Australia\, New Zealand\, the Netherlands\, and Germany.  The sustainable materials in the library now include “leathers” made from cactus\, kombucha\, mushrooms\, and pythons\, concrete from hemp\, band-aids from bamboo\, and even sustainable bio-glitter! \nIn this conversation\, SFSU Professor Fernando Carvalho and students Cole Galvin and Maria Nguyen discuss persuasive design strategies for creators\, product designers\, and architects—like developing products from biomaterials or offering a resource such as the SFSU Materials Learning Library\, as well as a current effort underway to compel education on sustainable building materials for all new building construction in collaboration with the University of California\, San Francisco and the City of San Francisco. In this conversation we will discuss strategies of both persuasion and regulation in hopes of compelling the creative community to make the critical shift to more sustainable design products and practices. \n  \nNOTE: This event requires climbing 2 flights of stairs to attend. There is no elevator or lift available. \n———————————————— \n“Climate Carrot or Sustainability Stick? SFSU Explores Strategies for Shifting to Sustainable Design Practices”\n \nSan Francisco State University School of Design \nProfessor Fernando Carvalho \nMaria Nguyen [SFSU Student]\nCole Galvin [SFSU Student]\nhttps://www.sfsusustainablematerials.org/

Whether you’re a climate design warrior or just looking to soak up some positive vibes\, this Climate Circle is a chance to connect with each other in the beautiful outdoors. Look forward to seeing you there! \nBONUS: Attendees will be entered into a raffle for a FREE 5-class pack from our generous friends at HAUM Yoga to continue your practice. \n  \nMeet on the Presidio Main Parade Lawn at Montgomery and Lincoln Blvd side across from the food trucks. Since then\, Creative Growth’s annual runway show has expanded into a generative fashion department within the studio\, partnering with important artists\, brands and designers across the country. Founded in 1974 in Oakland\, California by Elias Katz and Florence Ludins-Katz\, the organization was established with a mission to utilize art as a primary means for individuals with disabilities to express themselves  within a safe and nurturing community and gain professional gallery exposure. Creative Growth operates as both studio and gallery that not only showcases the works of its 140+ artists but actively promotes their inclusion into major collections and institutions globally\, such as MoMA\, the Smithsonian and the recent historic acquisition by SFMoMA. SUMMARY:Design Challenge: AI character re-design
DESCRIPTION:What if the Terminator was a friendly brainstorming assistant rather than a cyborg of mass destruction? For decades\, AI characters have proliferated in film\, television\, literature\, and other forms of popular media. These AI characters are not always evil or malicious\, but their interactions with humans could often be improved. They could benefit from a re-design. \nTogether\, we will imagine and re-design ethical Generative AI experiences by exploring the interactions of the most notorious AI characters. Working in teams\, participants will transform less-than-pleasant interactions with AI movie characters into user-friendly experiences. Each team will not only re-design each character\, they will improve the overall interaction experience with that character. Each team will then present a prototype (visual\, interactive\, storyboard\, performance\, etc) to demonstrate their results. \nThe best character re-design\, wins! Join the IBM SF design community for an afternoon of innovation and friendly competition.

SUMMARY:Developing a network of shared interest in the future of San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Problem Library which is supporting a renaissance toward beauty\, goodness\, and truth in education\, art\, and cultural infrastructure. \nSince 2017\, the [working] program has been transforming vacant retail spaces in San Francisco and Oakland into sites of creative use: studios\, galleries\, and installations. By building relationships with property owners the program is able to provide artists with free space to imagine and create public facing activations. Through these relationships the program has helped actualize visions for the future of retail footprints. This approach comes from the programs belief that vacancy is an opportunity to critically rethink what public spaces do for people and work toward a San Francisco that is overflowing with energy and life. \nThe programs latest collaboration has given purpose to a vacant storefront turning it into an atelier and showroom for the sculptor Lynette Nicole Betancur. Over the past six months Lynette has reimagined the empty space into a platform for collaboration with other designers & artists\, a venue for the sale of her sculptures\, and a site of beauty for neighbors. Going forward\, [working] is continuing to learn and adapt how it can support educational and cultural goals\, and is seeking builders\, developers\, and planners looking to invest in large-scale\, thriving environments designed for people. \nWe invite you to join us at Lynette’s atelier for an open house and to learn more about the history of [working]\, the programs future ambitions\, and how you can help us work toward a positive and healthy future for San Francisco.

SUMMARY:Becoming A Climate Designer for a Regenerative Future: A Guided Networking Experience
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to design with climate in mind?  How might designers think more like ecologists?  How do I express my unique essence in a way that regenerates the whole?  What is the world we want to live in\, not the one we want to avoid? \nJoin us for a guided networking event bringing designers interested in asking and living with the big gnarly questions at the intersection of design and climate.   Our co-facilitators\, Marc O’Brien of Climate Designers and Michelle Lee of Studio Rhye\, will provide prompts during the event to spark conversations on topics such as: designing for a flourishing world\, regenerative design\, shifting paradigms and mindsets.   Imagine connecting with other values-aligned designers in a structured way that cuts out the awkwardness and small talk of typical events.  Imagine thought-provoking prompts to examine how you think\, feel\, and act on climate resilience.  Imagine clarity on how to channel your desires to contribute to climate change. \nLeave the event with a clearer understanding of your role as a person in the design industry who thinks and acts with ecological consciousness. Gain a sense of agency\, clarity\, and community. Participants will receive a digital packet with links to resources. \nRSVPs full? Click here to join the waitlist.

SUMMARY:Rafi Ajl at The Future Perfect Exhibition and Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Experience the work of Rafi Ajl at The Future Perfect (3085 Sacramento Street)\, beginning June 7.  Ajl is a Berkeley\, California-based artist who is obsessed with form and process. He is driven by the possibilities of materiality\, an insatiable curiosity\, and an undisputed reverence for the pressures of the creative process. At The Future Perfect’s Pacific Height’s gallery\, see a range of his works\, including furniture\, glass works\, and more. \nSchedule: \n\nExhibition Gallery Open 10am-6pm\, stop by any time to see the exhibit Monday-Friday.\nOpening Celebration Event 6pm-8pm\n\nThe Future perfect will be serving Las Jaras wine for  the opening celebration. \nThis event celebrates the exhibition opening; however\, attendees are also encouraged to visit the Gallery\, open from 10 am – 6pm\,  Monday through Friday. \nRafi Ajl (b.1983) is a Berkeley\, California-based artist who is obsessed with form and process. He is driven by the possibilities of materiality\, an insatiable curiosity\, and an undisputed reverence for the pressures of the creative process. \nAjl’s approach is also deeply rooted in post-structuralist critical theory\, which emphasizes that the process is never terminal but boundless and full of play. \nAjl studied literature and critical theory at Hampshire College\, where he gained a foundation in post-structuralist critical theory\, the Situationists\, a prominent group of European intellectuals and avant-garde artists\, and the German philosopher Walter Benjamin. \nBorn and raised in Brooklyn\, New York\, Ajl grew up in a deeply artistic home where making things was a way of life. He can scarcely recall a time when he wasn’t building and taking things apart\, and cites his quilter mother\, who taught him how to sew and about color\, as an early influence. His house was an assemblage of folk art\, antique furniture\, and quilts\, where brightly colored walls contrasted with parquet floors and neo-Victorian details. In 2012\, Ajl graduated from the California College of the Arts with an MFA in Design.

SUMMARY:Mahjong: The Intersections of Tradition\, Community\, and Craft
DESCRIPTION:EXiT at Catharine Clark Gallery\, FYRN\, and Sharon Zheng cordially invite you to an afternoon centered around learning mahjong\, a Chinese game played by four people. The event\, hosted by EXiT\, will take place in Catharine Clark Gallery’s main exhibition space during the run of In Real Life by Michael Hall and Salty Rainbow by Imin Yeh. \nImin Yeh is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in sculpture\, installation\, and participatory events. Her projects use print media both as a technical tool for realizing large-scale works and as a conceptual strategy for exploring free exchange and craft-based economies. Among Yeh’s diverse and ongoing projects\, this event will highlight her project Paper Mahjong\, of which kits can be purchased to build at home. This project encourages contemplation of the unseen labor behind cultural souvenirs\, while also delving into how games and craft nurture community\, collaboration\, and companionship. \nIn addition to Paper Mahjong\, mahjong game sets will be available for attendees to play. Local artist and creative Sharon Zheng will be present with her handmade How to Play Mahjong zines\, providing insights and instruction in playing the traditional game. In conversation with Salty Rainbow is In Real Life\, a show of trompe-l’œil artworks by Michael Hall that bridge painting\, sculpture\, and shelving. Both artists’ work engages with the domestic\, parenting\, and the ordinary details of family and community life through highly crafted artworks that draw upon historical artmaking techniques. Seating for game-play will be provided by FYRN\, renowned for its marriage of traditional woodworking techniques with modern manufacturing to produce elegant essential furniture pieces that advance the tradition of American furniture-making.

SUMMARY:The Future is Physital - Designs that Bridge the Physical and Digital World\, Enabled by XR\, AI and other Emerging Tech
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, designer and artist Xiaobi Iris Pan (https://irispan.net/) will share design trends made possible with the latest AI and XR technologies. Iris believes the future of design should poetically bridge the digital world with the physical\, to create a world where bits and atoms are interwoven\, where technology is used to connect rather than isolate\, inspire rather than distract\, nourish rather than exhaust people. \nThe lecture will feature 3 of Iris’ independent design works\, including\n1) Love Cassette\, the first-of-its-kind sound interactive installation that can turn one’s love message into a postcard on the spot\, to date\, Love Cassette has been visited by over 1 million participants around the world.\n2)Heat Chair\, an innovative computational design and fabrication system that can turn human ergonomics data into the robotic heating path\, to manufacture a chair that is completely responsive to human ergonomics.\n3) a series of XR interactive projects that break the boundary between the digital and physical world. \nThe audience will learn from the lecture: \n1) The future is physical. From an experience level\, Iris is advocating for hybrid and holistic experience design where the experience itself involves multiple senses and bridges the digital world with the physical.\n2) From a human level\, our products and experiences need to be personalizable\, anticipatory\, and adaptable to human needs and various human states. And luckily\, now these designs are made possible with advanced AI technology.\n3) From an environment and system level\, the future of design needs to be programmable. (Material\, Algorithm\, Fabrication. etc.) \nThese trends are also made possible because of the most recent advanced manufacturing techniques (e.g. nano-scale 3D printing\, bio-programmable material\, etc.)

SUMMARY:Chronos vs. Kairos: The Battle for Attention
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive discussion and exploration of time. How do we experience it? Are we using it wisely? The technological advancements of the digital age enable us to keep our calendars full and our lives productive as ever\, but at what cost? \n\nThe ancient Greeks had two concepts of time. Chronos is quantitative time\, measured in years\, months\, weeks\, days\, hours\, minutes\, seconds. Kairos\, is qualitative time or also known as “Deep Time”\, an experience where our perception of Chronos stops or disappears\, and we’re able to be truly present. \nThis event will invite you to examine and explore how these two concepts play out\, and consider how we may cultivate greater mindfulness and deeper experiences in our daily lives and design practices. \nBrought to you by:\nPact Studio – Creating meaningful\, unmistakable brands.\nExistential Co. – Storyteller exploring life\, death\, and meaning.\nDavid Bill – Service Designer and UX’er interested in history\, systems thinking\, human behavior\, and the role of technology.

SUMMARY:Women in Leadership & Design (WILD) Jam: Focus Your Vision
DESCRIPTION:We are redirecting the attention of our Women in Leadership & Design (WILD) community through a vision boarding party during SF Design Week. Vision boarding is an inspiring creative tool for focusing one’s attention on a better\, more intentional future — a major part of both SFDW’s and WILD’s reasons for being. When we give our hopes\, dreams\, and wishes form — whether we put them in words by writing them down\, or make them tangible through visual design — they are more likely to become a reality. So we will gather\, with magazines and collage materials\, to bring our unique visions for creating a better world and daily life\, together.  \nWe will provide thematic creative prompts ahead of the session\, such as ‘How do you want to show up bold?’ to guide all participants in selecting powerful images to work with\, that uplift and elevate our mission and purpose. Participants are encouraged to bring their own inspirational materials\, adding a personal touch to their vision boards and enhancing the collective creativity of our WILD community. We are excited to ignite change through art and design. As this year’s ‘Attention’ theme suggests\, we seek to bring together a global and intersectional community of designers\, strategists\, artists\, and activists to focus on connections yet to be made. Learn more about WILD here. \nAgenda: \n\n3:30-3:45: Gathering and mingling\n3:45-4:00: Brief introductions and intentions.\n4:00-5:15: Vision boarding; 5 minute break moments will happen throughout the creation session to share ideas\, works in progress\, and reflections.\n5:15-5:45: Share vision boards with one another\n5:45-6:00: Wrap up & goodbyes\n\nThis WILD Jam session will be held at The Box SF\, the former ‘William Randolph Hearst Printing Plant’ and one of San Francisco’s premier event spaces. It has been generously donated by Mark E. Sackett\, Founder and Executive Creative Director at TheBoxSF.com\, Sackett Design and Reflectur.com. DESCRIPTION:The late Filipino-American artist Pacita Abad (1946-2004)—whose 32-year career focused on marginalized people on the “periphery of power”—is having a major cultural moment. The Pacita Abad Exhibition opened at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis\, MN in 2023\, as the largest museum exhibit in the U.S. devoted to an Asian American female artist.  The exhibition traveled next to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It is currently on view at MoMA PS1 in New York\, then later this year\, travels to the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. \nDuring her career\, Abad created over 4\,500 artworks\, adapting the trapunto technique which give her paintings a beguiling\, sculptural appearance.  Her work—which has been exhibited in over 200 museums\, galleries and other venues\, around the world— is in public\, corporate and private art collections in over 70 countries. Go behind the scenes of this ground-breaking exhibition:  Hear from Matthew Villar Miranda\, Curatorial Associate at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in conversation with Lisa Boquiren.  Matthew—who as Visual Arts Curatorial Fellow worked on the Pacita Abad Exhibition at the Walker Art Center—will discuss the many references that for them informed the conceptual basis of the exhibition and catalog.  Other presenters TBA \nGo behind the scenes of this ground-breaking exhibition: Featuring Matthew Villar Miranda (Curatorial Associate at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive\, and former Visual Arts Curatorial Fellow at Walker Art Center); Alison Guh (Curatorial Associate\, Contemporary Art at SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art); and Sheldon Gooch (Curatorial Assistant at MoMA PS1) in conversation with Lisa Boquiren. \nThe group will dialog on the references that for them informed the conceptual basis of the exhibition and catalog for the Walker Art Center\, as well as for the touring institutions.
