As designers, we are accustomed to thinking of our work as a process that resolves itself in things. What happens, then, when the process itself is the product?
In the growing field of public space activation and temporary use, designers are confronting this question every day. This new realm of work challenges our understanding of what it means for a project to be “finished”, and of what we – along with our clients and the communities we engage – are left with when it is.
Borrowing from art practice and community organizing alike, this conversation will explore the relationships between effort and outcome, duration and impact, experience and place. Hosted by ENVELOPE, creators of PROXY and NOW Hunters Point, it will feature a range of voices working across space activation, program curation, and community-engaged art and design around the Bay Area.
