Faulkner Architects was formed in 1998 by Principal Greg Faulkner, with an office near Lake Tahoe and another in Berkeley in the San Francisco Bay Area. The work of the practice is varied—ranging from hospitality projects to institutional buildings (including master planning)—though it is best known for private houses.
Raised in Indiana, Faulkner earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of New Mexico, followed by a Master of Architecture from M.I.T. Faulkner is drawn to alternative design models, particularly the model that became known in the 1970s as ‘vernacular architecture’, an architecture driven by process. Faulkner’s interest in process, material choices, construction methods, and the California landscape continue to guide the work of his practice today.
The firm has garnered a wide range of professional recognition, including AIA California Council Residential Honor awards. Regularly published, the firm’s work has appeared in Architectural Digest, Dwell, Wallpaper*, Dezeen, among others.
