After decades of planning, design, and construction, the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) opened to the public in 1972. Join the Northern California chapter of Docomomo US on a tour to learn about BART’s history, mid-century modern design, and unique construction. This tour will focus exclusively on BART in the East Bay!
The tour will visit several East Bay BART stations designed by prominent local Modern architects, artists, and designers, including Gardner Dailey, William Mitchell, Alfonso Pardinas, and Ernest Born. While riding between stations, information on additional system components will be presented, including graphics, industrial design, and public artwork.
Gather at the Lake Merritt BART Station at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2019. The tour will start promptly and last approximately 90 minutes, including stops at MacArthur, Downtown Berkeley, and other stations on the Richmond line.
