SUMMARY:Ecological Futures in Design
DESCRIPTION:This conversation explores the future of ecological design beyond “sustainable materials” —shifting the dialog from replacing one material with another\, and instead rethinking our relationship to matter itself. New ecologies of design are emerging as a practice of building interdependency: with ecosystems\, with communities\, and with non-human life. This panel conversation brings together practitioners across the design world in architecture\, materials design\, human-computer interfaces\, fashion\, and industrial design for a dialog on the frontiers of new design ecologies with biomaterials.  \n  \nFrom extraction and consumption toward participation\, reciprocity\, and new forms of exchange – biomaterials are becoming a medium for new relationships between the built and living world: \n  \n\nOcean Ecosystem Regeneration with Sea Urchin Architectural Surfaces | Virj Kan –  Marblis by Primitives\nBiobased & Natural materials adoption in the Built Environment | Teresa Jan –  Perkins&Will\nDialog on the paradox of making in a climate crisis through fashion | Stella Harry Lee – WithRawMaterials \nNarrative Futures that create awareness and mindfulness around ecology through Fungi | Jerome Tavé – 10th Floor Studio\nBiomaterials and Biosensors: From Growable Interfaces to Biosensing Cosmetics | Katia Vega – Interactive Organisms Lab\, UC Davis\n\n  \nVirj Kan – Marblis by Primitives   \nVirj Kan is a designer\, materials engineer\, and the Founder of Primitives. Primitives is a biodesign lab that develops advanced materials to restore nature’s balance. Through cutting-edge materials science\, innovative design\, and environmental science\, Primitives is working to reshape the modern materials landscape into a platform that drives nature and biodiversity regeneration. Its architectural surfaces brand\, MARBLIS™ brings this vision to the built environment and introduces a new class of stone surfaces called biocalcite\, engineered to support ecosystem repair and design performance. Its debut innovation\, Urchinite™ is a biocalcite surface made from ecologically destructive purple sea urchins\, designed to restore kelp forests and regenerate ocean biodiversity. \n  \nTeresa Jan –  Perkins&Will  \nTeresa Jan is an architect and urbanist who leads design with curiosity and a deep commitment to community\, nature\, and their evolving interconnections. She brings a regenerative design ethos to diverse project types\, striving to advance climate justice through inclusive\, place-based solutions. Teresa listens with intention\, embracing complexity and the nuanced needs of each project to foster meaningful connections between people and the broader climate culture. A passionate advocate for healthy and resilient communities\, she promotes equitable building decarbonization and views all-electric cooking as a vital step toward a climate-aligned future. Teresa recently served as a content leader for The Building Decarbonization Practice Guide: A Zero Carbon Future for the Built Environment. She was a juror for the 2023 AIA Architecture Awards and remains active with AIASF COTE. Teresa also serves on the Northern California Regional Leadership Advisory Board for USGBC-CA. Currently\, she is the Director of Regenerative Design at Perkins & Will architects.  \n  \nStella Harry Lee – WithRawMaterials \nStella is a material and product designer exploring the future of materials and our evolving relationship with them. With a background in fiber arts\, she began by working closely with the raw ingredients of clothing—spinning\, dyeing\, and understanding their origins. Later\, her time at corporate fashion companies challenged her to think more critically about the lifecycle of products and the systems behind them. In response to the endless consumerism in the context of the climate crisis\, her latest work shifts focus toward biodegradable and bio-based materials like seaweed\, algae yarn\, mycelium\, and fish skin. Her work now aims to bridge the worlds of science and consumers through product and textile design. \n  \nJerome Tavé – 10th Floor Studio  \nJerome Tavé (he/him) is an artist with a background in design and has worked as an interaction designer for a variety of companies and design groups\, in addition to teaching in the Web & New Media program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Over the last 6 years\, Jerome has incorporated fungi as a central part of his work. By experimenting with materials\, and presenting them in new ways\, Jerome hopes to explore narratives for new futures\, while creating awareness and mindfulness around ecology. 10th Floor Studio is a conceptual art studio operated by Jerome Tavé and Kyle Lawson focusing on works that envision futures they want to see and build together. \n  \nKatia Vega – Interactive Organisms Lab\, UC Davis \nKatia Vega is an Associate Professor in the Department of Design at the University of California\, Davis\, where she founded and directs the Interactive Organisms Lab. Her research integrates human–computer interaction\, biotechnology\, and wearable technologies to explore how the body and living systems can serve as platforms for computing. She introduced Beauty Technology (electronics embedded into cosmetics) and has since expanded her work to Biocosmetic Interfaces for discreet\, non-invasive health monitoring with cosmetics\, Animal Biosensing Computing for biosensing on animals biofluids\, and Growable Interfaces that employ bio-based materials for sustainable devices.

SUMMARY:Global Contemporary Design\, Crafted in Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Colección Estudio is a design studio founded by three designers: Andrés Cacho\, Manuel López\, and Daniel Martínez\, who explore the intersection of art\, craft\, and contemporary furniture. Since their founding\, they have built a practice rooted in Mexican cultural legacy\, material experimentation\, and collaboration with artisans\, producing limited-edition objects that travel between local workshops and international markets. \nThis talk traces their journey: from establishing a design studio that bridges Mexico and the United States\, to evolving into mentors through Punto 3\, a new platform that supports emerging designers through knowledge exchange\, collaborative production\, and a shared belief that craft must be projected into the future\, not just preserved. \nIn a city shaped by innovation and cross-cultural exchange\, Colección Estudio invites the San Francisco design community to explore what it means to build a global design practice with deep local roots\, and how mentorship\, multiplicity\, and making become tools for collective growth. \nBio: \nColeccion Estudio is made up of three Mexican designers: Andrés Cacho\, Manuel López and Daniel Martínez. \nBased in Mexico City\, San Francisco and Queretaro\, Coleccion Estudio creates objects at a slower pace and with a more humane process that fosters long-lasting emotional connections with the spaces you inhabit. Inspired by stories and techniques rooted in our culture\, we translate them into limited-edition furniture\, accessories and collectible design for your home.

SUMMARY:The Art of Making Surfboards
DESCRIPTION:Michael Quesenbury is a native of the Pacific Northwest who transplanted to California at the end of the millennium looking for all things that come with Californification; beautiful weather\, fabled cities\, outdoor lifestyles and a melting pot of design and art. \nHis simple mission statement is “I get out of bed to create beautiful things.”  Educated with a degree in architecture and a 30-year career in luxury construction\, Michael’s work focuses on functional creations that strive for a classic and timeless quality complimented with a story.  An object without a story is an object.  An object with a story is an experience. \nRomanticized by the surf culture of California’s 50-60’s and enamored by legendary coach builders like Ferrari and Buggati\, Michael has set off to create one off\, bespoke\, vintage style surfboards and paddleboards that encapsulated high design and fine craftsmanship into each board. \nEvery detail is executed with a purpose or thought initiating with its function and stylized through use of reclaimed material\, sacred geometry\, celebration of the defect and integration into the greater work as a whole.  The work is purposely focused on the element of hand-crafted techniques\, always striving for perfection but never perfect. \nLastly\, the work is functional.  It is not meant to be a precious jewel.  Scratches and dings are part of the aging process\, only adding to the story of the creation and the experience.  Enjoy. \nMichael’s work has been featured on NBC’s California Live & Fox Sports\, has received the 2024 Award of Excellence and 2025 Best of Art awards at the annual Artistry in Wood Exhibition\, the 2026 Bay Area Woodworker’s Association Exhibition Best of Creative Art\, a finalist for Johnny Depp’s “The People’s Artist”\, and has been selected for the juried Nimbus Arts “Nimbash” Auction multiple times.  Michael is the current chairperson for the Sonoma County Woodworker’s Association and sits on the Santa Rosa Community College’s Construction Management Advisory Board.

SUMMARY:Plural by Nature: Curiosity as a Creative Practice
DESCRIPTION:This 40-minute presentation will reframe creativity through cultural movement and lived multiplicity\, inspired by Sonya Yu’s upbringing between Beijing and the Bay Area. The duality of cultures taught her to move between languages\, expectations\, and ways of seeing — not as a strategy\, but as survival. Over time\, that in-between space became her creative practice: a way of approaching the world through curiosity rather than expertise. \nThis presentation is less about mastery and more about staying porous\, about harnessing everyone’s innate contradictions as a form of design thinking rooted in observation\, translation\, and presence. Through personal storytelling and reflections on cross-cultural identity\, interdisciplinary practice\, and the quiet power of wonderment\, Sonya invites audiences to reconsider what it means to create without needing to be the authority in the room. Plurality becomes not just a theme\, but a way of moving — allowing curiosity\, conversation\, and cultural fluency to guide process. \nAudiences will walk away with an invitation to embrace creativity as a living\, plural practice — where not knowing becomes generative\, curiosity becomes methodology\, and moving between worlds becomes a source of creative momentum rather than fragmentation.
