Lisa Fleming Ceramics
Lisa Fleming Ceramics is a sole proprietor, creating handmade, design-focused, ceramic pieces. Each work is one of a kind, thrown on the pottery wheel using porcelain clay. All glazes and colored porcelains are made in the studio.
The Maker and Their Production Space
All work is made by the artist in a studio in San Francisco.
The Making Process
All pieces are thrown on a pottery wheel from porcelain clay. The glazes are made in the studio from dry minerals and all aspects of the process are done by the artist; throwing, trimming, refining, sanding, glazing, and firing, (as well as photography, marketing, sales, shipping, and website management)
The Production Model
My production model is very ‘small batch’. Each piece is made individually. A batch example might be the colored porcelains, which are made at a rate of 5-10 pieces every few months as the colored clay gets made and the very slow production process happens. It takes a minimum of a month for a work to go through the cycle from creation to completion.
The Materials
I use porcelain clay and dry minerals to create the forms and glazes. I love the smooth surface and very white color of the porcelain. I am very specific about the surface of the work and have developed my own glazes and modified existing recipes to achieve the look I want. The new black porcelain is allowing me to focus more on the bare, smooth surface and more refined edges. Through my process, I produce almost no waste with my clay recycling techniques.
