Rough Linen
Rough Linen started ten years ago with original glorious rumpled linen bedding, branching into all aspects of fabric decor, and launching slow-fashion linen clothing line, Touch by Rough Linen in 2018. We are a woman-led company with our workshops based in Marin County, California, hiring local seamstresses to sew our linens in-house. Sustainability is the cornerstone of our company ethos.
SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
Materials & Ingredients
Our products are pure linen made from 100% flax, OekoTex certified. All our fabrics are water-finished, with no additives or treatments, so you can use them straight away. Whenever possible, we even source sustainable trims such as coconut shell buttons, organic cotton labels, recycled hangtags and recycled zippers.
Packaging & Delivery
We wrap with tissue paper and ribbon, never plastic, and use recycled cardboard boxes or PO supplied standard rate boxes. We ship via USPS, UPS, FedEx and DSL, depending on destination.
Quality & Value
Linen is a strong, sustainable natural material, valued for its beauty and utility. At the end of its natural life (which can easily be extended with proper care and mending) it can be returned to the earth, completely biodegradable. Linen is twice as durable as cotton, and it becomes even softer and more beautiful with each wash. We also believe in slow fashion, and design our collections to be classic, timeless, and to be worn and loved for years to come.
Waste Reduction
Offcuts are used for smaller items, and we donate scraps every month to teachers, crafters and sewers. Even linen lint can be used for crafts like paper-making, and can enhance compost, so nearly nothing goes to waste. Most recently, we used our linen scraps to make masks for health care workers and to donate to our local community.
Local Supply Chains
We love our local community and work with local supply chain partners whenever possible. Currently we are working with Sonoma Wool to create pillow inserts and duvets for our linen covers, with the wool from their local flock of sheep. We make all of our products locally and hire talented women from our community to help us create our products.
Energy Efficiency
Our work spaces have skylights for natural light and fresh air, fans and good insulation. We are conscientious about heat and light usage and encourage natural heating/cooling whenever possible.
Core Values
Sustainability is the starting point of everything that we produce. We source only natural, organic, and chemical-free materials and trims for all of our products. We do not use disposable dishes or plastic in the office lunchroom, and recycle all paper and office waste.
Goals & Aspirations
We are always researching the latest innovative sustainable, plant-based materials and trims. We look forward to working with more local design partners and helping to grow our community and local economy in the near future.
Certifications & Memberships
Our fabrics are all OekoTex certified, the dying low impact & is azo-free certified.
