Neofect Smart Balance

After a decade of focusing on hand and upper arm rehabilitation, and multiple requests from patients and their therapists, Neofect created a more engaging and measurable therapeutic device for patients who need to recover leg function. Neofect’s first lower-limb solution, Smart Balance, focuses on core strength, stabilization, balance, and leg movement. The 2.5ft “Dance Dance Revolution”- esque board evaluates a patient’s posture during games, tracking their movements to provide feedback and adjust difficulty based on progress.
Instead of the traditional therapy–like walking or marching in place–more than 16 augmented reality games like “Rock Band” encourage patients to step to the beat of a song. Another game, “Airplane,” works players’ balance by prompting them to shift the weight in their feet back and forth to dodge obstacles. The Smart Balance physically and cognitively challenges patients, whether they’re relearning to walk or regaining range of motion and confidence.

The Smart Balance tailors its game recommendations and difficulty levels to the patient’s specific recovery journey. For example, as patients progress, the Smart Balance increases the required speed and range of movement and coordination. By incrementally leveling up, patients are better challenged, more engaged in recovery, and motivated to progress further.

Patients can measure improvements through instant visual and auditory feedback while playing. There’s also an option to remotely and securely share post-activity reports with therapists to ensure proper advancement.

By utilizing the engaging, fun, and competitive aspects of gamified rehabilitation, the Neofect Smart Balance enhances the patient experience, encourages consistent practice, and improves the odds of recovery. This solution increases accessibility of treatment for patients worldwide. Without it, patients are left feeling unmotivated, discouraged, and at risk of losing their mobility.

About Neofect

Neofect creates customized digital rehabilitation solutions for patients recovering from stroke, cerebral palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and dementia. For this population, repetition is key to a successful recovery, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. That’s why each Neofect rehabilitation solution uses gamified therapy training to invigorate the muscles and stimulate the senses, reinforcing cognitive function and accelerating neuroplasticity (the brain-body connection). This technology allows patients to engage in games backed by physical and occupational therapists. With gamified rehabilitation solutions, Neofect aims to move patients farther from outdated, traditional rehabilitation. By digitizing rehabilitation and moving therapy into the 21st century, patients are able to access their progress in real-time and have more fun in their recovery. Providing patients with measurable results and comprehensive data isn’t typical in rehabilitation, but it allows for more transparent conversations with therapists and progress in line with patient goals. And it’s a game changer.
