Contemplative Commons at the University of Virginia

Aidlin Darling Design

Recipient

On the University of Virginia’s historic Jeffersonian Grounds, the Contemplative Commons is a first-of-its-kind, pan-university center to support student resilience through immersive, experiential and participatory learning.

At a significant campus gateway, the 57,000 sqft Commons is a beacon for contemplative education, offering multi-purpose studios for collaboration, performances, physical activity, and contemplative practice. An in-context research wing, visualization studios and an immersive art installation provide innovative, sensorial learning environments. An integrated living bridge creates an accessible route from the residence halls to the Academical Village, while embedding the contemplative environment into daily student life.

Biophilic at its core, the building massing draws the Dell wetland into the campus experience. Across all four stories, contemplative spaces connect to gardens and terraces. Natural materials—fieldstone walls, wood columns and soffits—reinforce the biophilia. From the expansive central courtyard to small wood-lined studios for reflection, the Commons fosters growth, community, and wellbeing.
