WUIware

The WUIware raise such pivotal questions such as: How do we rebuild from the ashes? And how can materials associated with destruction become materials for creation through additive manufacturing?
The WUIware vessels and water jugs are 3D printed from California wildfire ash collected from the El Dorado Fire in San Bernardino County and the SCU and CZU Lightning Complex fires in Santa Clara County. The ash is compounded with a bio-polymer and extruded into filament. WUI (woo-eee) stands for the Wildland Urban Interface—the zone where human development meets or intermingles with undeveloped land and vegetative fuels. As cities expand, the WUI continues to grow; in recent years, more than 16,000 structures have been lost to wildfires in California alone. The WUIware are artifacts that help us remember what we have lost.
