Greenzyme

University of California, Berkeley

Student Honorable Mention

Greenzyme facilitates a waste-reducing lifestyle by empowering households to transform food waste into useful eco-enzyme products. Eco-enzymes are produced in a natural fermentation process facilitated by bacteria and yeast on fruit and vegetable scraps. Depending on the recipe, eco-enzymes can be used as cleaners, fertilizers, pesticides, etc.

Greenzyme streamlines the fermentation process with a uniquely designed cap featuring a one-way self-venting airlock and an integrated pH meter to track levels and alert spoilage. LEDs indicate progress and abnormal trends, ensuring reliable monitoring.  An interchangeable lid allows for easy liquid filtering post-fermentation. Supported by a smartphone app, Greenzyme provides customized recipes, ingredient labels, and real-time fermentation updates. Users can also track the volume of food waste converted into eco-enzymes, directly seeing their positive impact.
