Honorable Mention: The House

FENNIE+MEHL Architects

The House is home to entrepreneurial UC Berkeley students, faculty and alumni and gives them a physical space to work towards making ideas a reality. The slightly quirky and inventive design captures the unique ethos of Cal, while being flexible enough for all the uses inherent in a start-up life cycle. Highlighting the city’s culture, a student artist was engaged to create a custom mural. The street-facing storefront display, built from recycled materials, showcases the full array of House products made available to the community.

For the non-profit, FENNIE+MEHL provided design and construction management services pro bono, and partnered with two other firms to donate furniture and construction expertise. The House inspired these three design partners to explore new collaborations outside the industry norm. Together, the team hopes that the concept and the dedicated collaboration of giving is a template that will inspire creative community spaces around other universities.
