Bespoke Watch Projects
Bespoke Watch Projects creates limited production mechanical timepieces, designed and assembled by hand in Oakland, California. Producing pieces of equal part tool, art, and heirloom, the brand has become known for its combination of heritage-inspired details and modernist design influences. Every watch is unique to each owner, as well as being a distinctive object of expression from the watchmaker John Beck McConnico.
The Maker and Their Production Space
All watches are designed, assembled, and hand finished by the founder and watchmaker John Beck McConnico in his Oakland studio. Having come from a professional background in art direction, design, and fine art, he applies unconventional techniques to the production process. For example the latest “Intaglio Edition” collection incorporates engraved & patinated dials with direct influences from painting and printmaking—resulting in pieces that look both familiar yet unique.
All watches include a combination of in-house dials, artisan watchstraps, limited production cases, and modified Swiss components. John is always experimenting, prototyping, and collaborating to achieve the right balance of quality, longevity, and accessibility for his one-of-a-kind timepieces.
The Making Process
Much of the prototyping and watch production is done locally in Oakland and San Francisco incorporating CNC cutting, laser engraving, printing, and hand-finishing techniques. Final dial creation and finishing is also done in-house, applying custom patinas and engraving to recycled brass, copper, and sterling silver substrates. The brand also strives for a “zero waste” model, using leather cut-offs and dead stock materials for custom straps and recycled components for packaging.
The Production Model
Bespoke Watch Projects primarily produces made-to-order timepieces, incorporating handmade dials, straps, and customized mechanical movements for each customer. A small selection of ready made models are also offered online, allowing customers to order distinctive one-of-a-kind watches.
In addition to the custom “small batch” nature of the offerings, all dial designs are also limited in nature—usually limited to no more than 75 pieces per design & material.
