OJA Design
Oja Design is the small woodshop/design studio of Duncan Oja focusing on high quality custom wood furniture. My work draws on traditional American furniture but is also inspired by organic forms and textures from the woodworking process.
Workspace
My home/studio/woodshop is located in a renovated grocery store in an old 1930’s brick building in the small Bay Area town of Crockett, CA.
Production Model
My production model is a combination of very small-batch production of our designs, one-off more sculptural works, as well as a lot of custom work. I appreciate the quality and efficiency that comes with reproducing the same design, but enjoy the creativity and excitement with making new, one-of-a-kind pieces.
Tools
I use traditional woodworking machines and hand tools, often with an emphasis on woodturning. Some work draws more on traditional American furniture and uses classic techniques and joinery, other work is more sculptural or experimental and uses less traditional techniques.
Materials
We are very focused on working efficiently and sustainably, nothing is wasted. All wood is sourced from FSC certified mills with sustainable forestry practices. As much as possible I work with smaller, local Bay Area mills, utilizing native California wood species.
