soft-geometry
soft-geometry is a collaborative design studio creating collectible furniture and home objects around a central theme of softness. The studio, founded by Utharaa Zacharias & Palaash Chaudhary in 2018, looks to Indian craft traditions and culture to inform a diverse collection spanning furniture, lighting, and small accessories in a variety of different media. The studio works between San Francisco, USA & Kochi, India, drawing from and creating in both cities.
Workspace
The studio is an extension of the founder’s home in San Francisco – an 800 sq ft living space that operates as an office and studio for soft-geometry. All lighting pieces are handmade here along with parts of products that are handwoven or sewn. The best part of the space is its 20 ft window that spans the wall bathing the space in wonderful natural light.
Production Model
All furniture and lighting are made to order. The studio values & emphasizes the handmade nature of each product and creates every piece individually.
Tools
Tools range from simple wood pegs used for weaving cane, to silicone molds for casting resin and 3D printers for specific parts and prototypes. All products combine a mix of handmade and machine-made processes.
Materials
soft-geometry works with an unlimited material palette, sometimes offering different material options in a single product. The material list is wide-ranging, from steel, bamboo cane, yarn, resin, silicone, wax, repurposed wood and so on. The experimentative nature of every collection opens up newer and newer materials to the studio, the latest being a mixture of hemp fibers and lime cement called hempcrete.
