IA: San Francisco Studio Highlight

The new IA San Francisco studio represents more than a relocation; it is a deliberate repositioning of the firm within the fabric of the city itself. Moving from an upper-floor suite to a highly visible ground floor corner at the edge of the Financial and Jackson Square District transforms the studio into an outward-facing presence. The studio design engages San Francisco directly embracing the energy, diversity, and creative culture of the city while contributing to it in return.

This connection to the urban context begins at the perimeter with expansive street-facing windows that blur the boundary between inside and out, inviting the city to view IA’s design process, people, and product.

Inside, the studio is conceived as an innovation-driven design environment—built by designers, for designers. One enters the studio through a neon sign declaring “nothing great is done alone” – a direct reflection of IA’s global firm ethos, bringing together architecture and interiors, strategy, lighting design, and environmental graphics and working collaboratively regardless of studio location. The design materializes a harmony of people, place, and brand that strengthens connections, celebrates the city, and nurtures the studio’s bold innovative designs and creative wonder.

The space operates as a working showroom and experimental lab, where ideas are not only discussed but tested, displayed, and refined in real time. Every element reinforces a culture of curiosity and making. The double-height ground floor is intentionally active and visible, housing workshops, project rooms, and communal zones that showcase design in action. Above, a mezzanine level supports focused work, creating a dynamic sectional relationship between ideation and execution.

A dedicated teaching wall transforms everyday surfaces into tools for learning, with materials, assemblies, and construction systems on display and available for annotation. Overscaled measurement graphics—12-foot rulers embedded into walls and columns— give designers an intuitive understanding of scale in a way that is immediate and tactile. A locally embedded lighting studio further reinforces this hands-on ethos, empowering teams to test and refine lighting strategies in-house. These elements position the space not just as a workplace, but as a continuous learning environment—an innovation studio where knowledge is actively produced and shared.

The design team embraced a strategy rooted in reuse, adaptation, and community connection—incorporating reclaimed materials, reupholstered furnishings, and curated pieces sourced from local makers and secondary markets. This approach grounds the studio in San Francisco’s culture of sustainability and ingenuity, while reinforcing the idea that great design is driven by creativity, not excess.

Additional moments of community and care are woven throughout, reflecting both the needs of the team and the character of the city. A greenhouse-inspired kitchen and breakfast nook support daily rituals and social connection, while adjacent library and lounge spaces encourage informal exchange. Even unexpected interventions—like the transformation of a back room into a dog park overlooking Redwood Park—extends the studio’s connection to its surroundings and its people, reinforcing a culture that is distinctly human and locally rooted.

Ultimately, the San Francisco studio is a physical manifesto: a space that bridges city and studio, brand and practice, learning and making. It is an innovation hub that reflects how IA’s designers truly work—collaboratively, experimentally, and in constant dialogue with their environment. Visible from the street and embedded in the life of the city, the studio stands as both a showcase and a workshop.
