Honorable Mention: Civic Design
The City and County of San Francisco’s Office of Civic Innovation
San Francisco is teeming with resources, design talent, and innovation; and like many cities, it’s also encountering increasingly complex civic challenges. In 2015, the City and County of San Francisco’s Office of Civic Innovation created Civic Bridge, a program that recruits volunteer teams from local companies to contribute 20% of their time over a 16-week period. So far, Civic Bridge has engaged with 26 City Departments on 39 projects, with around 450 City staff and resident volunteers. The estimated fair-market value of probono work is $3.9 million, delivered through 24,000 volunteer hours. The program provides a new mechanism to leverage the expert skills of local residents to improve City services, as well as increase skills and capacity for our hard-working public servants.
